Brazilian Funk

Brazilian Funk

In Brazil, brasil funk does not refer to music, but to the actual parties or discos where this music is played. Although it originated in Rio, funk has become increasingly popular among the working classes in other parts of Brazil. Brazil funk shows influences of urban afro beat.

About the course

This dance is known for its dynamic, energetic and often sexually explicit style, reflecting the lively and direct nature of funk music. Some see it as vulgar and inappropriate, while others celebrate it as an authentic expression of youth culture and a reflection of real life in the favelas. Despite the controversy, funk has become an important part of Brazilian popular culture and influences dance styles around the world.

Brazilian funk is known for its intense energy and expressive movements. Typical elements are isolation of different parts of the body, fast and rhythmic movements of the hips, back and shoulders. One of the most prominent movements is the "quadradinho", where dancers move their hips and buttocks in a square pattern. For many young people in the favelas, dancing is a way to escape the daily reality of violence, poverty and social inequalities. Funk continues to inspire and reach dancers around the world, confirming its position as a significant cultural phenomenon.
